Howard Leu is an Asian American artist based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His
multidisciplinary art practice often starts at photo-image processes and extends to sculptural
and installation forms. His recent series of work entitled “My Father Was a Rhizome” uses
archival photographs, alternative photo processes, and family lore to tell the story of a young
man who left his homeland to take root far, far away. The series is a conversation between the
artist and his deceased father, whose immigrant story was never told to him. Using old family
photos, Leu reexamines his relationship with memories while reconstructing family stories. Leu
is a graduate student in the Art & Design Master of Fine Arts program at the University of
Wisconsin—Milwaukee’s Peck School of the Arts.
